The problem was that although my cellphone account had been set to ring for thirty seconds before the answering machine picked up, it was actually ringing for less time. She reset my account preferences and called my cellphone again. The cellphone then rang for the correct length of time, thirty seconds. As an extra, she advised me that AT&T Wireless would be short-staffed over Christmas, and she texted me a link to the website for tech support. By the way, I was connected to a human after only two menu steps: I listened to the menu and hit the proper response buttons.
